Five quick fixes that can make a big difference to how your home feels
Interior design and DIY can sometimes feel overwhelming daunting or like a slightly inconvenient chore you would much rather avoid. When you lead a hectic life, tackling your list of home improvements is the last thing you want to do when you step through your front door after a long day at work; however, if you do find yourself with a spare 15 or 20 minutes, here are five things you could do to improve the feeling of your home. These will make you feel accomplished and as though you are ready to take on the whole world - and who doesn’t enjoy feeling a little like a superhero every once in a while?
Upgrade your door or drawer knobs
Changing the knobs is one of the quickest and easiest ways to give a tired piece of furniture a new lease of life, but sometimes getting around to attaching the new fixtures and fittings you have purchased takes a while because it is one of those small jobs that is so easy to put off. This will only take a few minutes and you will be so pleased with how the final product looks that you will probably quickly begin wondering why it took you so long.
Hang some artwork
Art and photography can make a huge impact on the feeling of a space, but you are not alone if you find hanging art a bit of a tedious task. With a little preparation, you can have your favourite piece of art up on your chosen wall in under 15 minutes. Gather together the tools you will need and make sure that you have double checked that you are not running the risk of accidentally hammering a nail into any wires or pipes. Once your artwork is up, remember to step back and admire your handiwork. You are still allowed to feel proud of yourself, even if you have been putting it off for six months!
Clean your windows
This task is best reserved for a warm, sunny afternoon. Although it is not a particularly glamourous job, you will be surprised at just how much extra light your squeaky-clean windows will let into your home. Grab a bottle of your favourite window cleaner - or mix your own using water, white vinegar and some washing up liquid - and a cloth or some paper towels. Don't forget to put on a playlist of your favourite tunes so it does not feel like such a chore!
Bleed your radiators
The is a job that undoubtedly retains a permanent place on your ‘odd jobs to do around the house’ list, as it is something that should be done regularly to ensure your heating system is performing at its best. One slight turn of the bolt on each radiator is often all you need to do, making this is an incredibly quick - albeit repetitive - task to complete. If there is any air in your radiator, you will hear it; if there is no air, you will see some water spilling out. Just make sure you have a towel on hand so that you won’t be left with any spills to mop up.
Restyle your coffee table
Sometimes piles of post, remote controls that you are not 100 per cent sure what they are for, and other general clutter accumulate on the coffee table, meaning that there is not quite enough room for you to put your cup of tea and a bowl of your preferred snack to enjoy during your favourite TV show. We have all been there. Take a few minutes to have a quick tidy up and perhaps experiment with different accessories; for example, displaying a fresh bunch of flowers in the centre of your living room is a lovely reminder that spring is finally on its way!
