Five simple ways to introduce a sense of lightness and brightness into a space
Many homeowners cite the lack of light during the winter months as one of their least favourite things about their home. This does not come as much of a surprise, as natural light has a hugely positive impact on our general sense of wellbeing. The good news is that there are several minor changes we can make to allow more light to permeate throughout our homes, even when it is dull and drizzly outside.
Although this might sound like a small step, you will be surprised at just how much of a positive difference tying back your curtains can make. In a similar vein, committing to regular window cleans and diligently pruning any plants directly outside your windows will allow more natural light to flood through and brighten even the gloomiest of rooms.
A lick of paint
Wall colours are a fundamental component of good design; however, it is important to note that your colour palette does not need to be limited solely to shades of white and off-white if you are not excited by them. Consider shades of millennial pink and warm soft peaches, or play with green, violet or blue feature hues to give your walls some visual breathing space, which will ultimately make your rooms feel much airier.
The finish of your chosen paint should also be an important consideration. Many big paint brands have ranges that have been specifically designed to reflect more light; in addition, it is worth looking at traditional eggshell and gloss finishes. You could even choose to incorporate both eggshell and matt versions of the same colour to highlight specific areas within a room in interesting ways.
Functional furnishings and accessories
Opting for light-reflecting glass furniture over heavier-looking pieces is an ideal way to help your space feel much bigger without compromising storage space. Simply swap wooden coffee and console tables for glass alternatives, step back, and bask in the sense of space surrounding you. When accessorising, think well-placed large formal mirrors, glass vases holding an array of beautiful blooms, and shiny metallic candle holders and picture frames.
Beneath your feet
You might want to invest in a light-toned carpet, tiles or wooden flooring, but it is important to never underestimate the power of a well-designed rug. A textured white or cream shaggy rug will introduce an element of visual interest without draining light; alternatively, you could play with pattern and choose a design with a large-scale geometric design, the clean lines of which should guide the eye expertly around the room.
