I Do Like to Be Beside The Seaside
It is a bit of a cliché, but we all do love a bit of seaside in the summer, which may explain the popularity of the beachy seaside look inside our homes. With the unreliability of our weather, it may make more sense to bring the beach indoors. And a nautical, New England look is unlikely to date, as it’s one of the most enduring ‘themes’ for both interiors and fashion.
You do need to exercise a little caution, as full-on nautical can be a bit much and end up looking like a fish and chip restaurant. Stay away from fishing nets draped across the ceiling, and start with a neutral palate of soft sandy beiges, greys or light blues. Not only are these the natural shades of the coastal world, but they make a great base for the rest of your ‘look’.
And a nautical look works beautifully in any room. There is an incredible range of textiles available on the high street or online, from the very child-friendly to the much more sophisticated, quirky or whimsical. If you’re decorating a kid's room, you can definitely embrace the theme more fully with bunting, or pirates or an underwater mural.
A very stylish and grown-up way to interpret the theme is to bring in some striped fabric, particularly reds and blues. They also go well with just about every style of furniture, and the best thing is that stripes never go out of fashion, so you can afford to invest in the look without worrying that it’ll look dated by next year.
Light-coloured woods and natural shapes also work well, as they bring to mind an image of driftwood. You can even buy furniture, picture frames and pieces of art work made from driftwood for an authentic look. If you prefer a different finish, how about painted wood? If you have it already, or plan to install it, tongue-and-groove panelling gives a real beach hut or weatherboarding vibe, as do painted floorboards.
And you don’t have to spend lots of money or buy new curtains, as there are any number of gorgeous accessories out there too, from vases to rugs, coasters and mugs. These range from simple stripes to very seaside-ish shell, boat or fish designs from the high-street or a special designer look. So climb on board: the design world is your oyster.
