Interior trends for 2016
If 2016 is your year for redecorating, we’ve taken a look at some of the trends that look likely to be big news. As with fashion, interior trends often start out at the high end of the market; however, happily for most of us and for our bank balances, it doesn’t take long for the high street and other retailers to catch up, meaning these looks are really affordable.
You don’t have to splash out on big pieces of furniture, or even redecorate. Interior trends cover everything from paint to furniture, including textiles and smaller items such as crockery and glassware. These will work well if you have neutral walls and carpets, meaning that there is no need to completely redecorate; instead, simply update your home with a few well-chosen accessories.
Vintage-inspired interiors are still very popular, which is a reflection of the current 1950s and 1970s revival on the catwalk and on the high street. This is good news if your home contains a mix of styles. An eclectic style does look better when it is not too cluttered, particularly if you are mixing furniture from different eras. This is an affordable look to achieve, as you can probably use some of your existing furniture.
Metallic and reflective surfaces continue to be very fashionable in 2016. Rose gold and copper have been the star performers over recent years, but yellow gold is coming back strong; in fact, all shades of metal feature in the predictions for next year. You probably wouldn’t want to buy a gold sofa, but you can introduce metallic very easily. Think light fittings with pendant shades, mirrors, and soft furnishings.
The trend for ‘nature’ reflects a trend for a simple approach. This includes the use of natural surfaces and materials, such as marble and wood, and is also reflected in the botanical and foliage prints turning up on crockery, fabrics and ornamental items. There are offerings to suit every pocket, from the luxury retailers down to the supermarkets and high street retailers.
Even colours go in and out of fashion. According to interior design and fashion magazines, blue and green are the colours of the moment. Blues are at the darker end of the spectrum, from royal blue through to midnight
. All shades of green are currently enjoying their time in the sun, probably as a result of the ‘nature’ theme. Again, if you don’t want to redecorate, it is easy to bring in these colours with accessories such as cushions, candles, vases and placemats.
