Making the most of the January sales

Despite the fact that most of us spend a fair amount of money over the Christmas period, you have probably noticed that retailers are very keen for us to spend even more in the post-Christmas sales.

Some of the offers are very tempting. If you need a big ticket item, such as a television, computer, sofa, table or large white good, there are definitely some great deals out there; however, it is very easy to get carried away.

Do your research

While big retailers are offering huge ‘savings’, you might find the item cheaper or the same price from a shop or retailer that does not even have a sale on. Smaller niche retailers can sometimes afford to offer competitive prices throughout the year because they specialise in a particular area, and it does not take too much time and effort to sit down at the computer for an hour or so to check what is out there. Price comparison websites can be particularly helpful during the sales.

Don’t panic

To keep your head and end up with good deals, you need to approach the sales with caution. Firstly, what do you really need? Don’t buy something just because it is a good deal. There are many impulse buys that take place at this time of year, some of which can end up being costly mistakes. Sofas or televisions that don’t fit are a prime example and it is surprisingly easy to get caught up in the ‘it’s a bargain’ mentality. Remember that something is only a bargain if you actually need/want/like it. Your rights as a consumer are the same for sale items as they are for full-price items, but it is worth checking the retailers’ ‘cooling-off’ and returns policy before you sign on the dotted line.

Stick to a budget

If you only want to spend £200, don’t spend more than this. A table that is reduced from £700 to £500 is still £300 over your budget, no matter how good the discount. If you can't see something at the price you want, consider waiting until you can afford it. Boring but sensible is no bad thing when it comes to spending money!

This is a time of year when there are some really good deals to be had and if you have had your eye on something all year, this may well be the time to snap up a bargain; however, don’t feel pressured into making a quick decision, as you might well spend the rest of the year regretting it!
