Seven things you should not overlook when moving into your new home
When moving into a new home, it can be very easy to get caught up in deciding where to put your furniture and ensuring every box gets placed in the correct room to make unpacking that little bit easier; however, here are seven things you should not overlook when you are settling into your new surroundings.
Locate the mains
The importance of knowing exactly where the stopcock and other mains supplies are located cannot be overstated. You do not want to be caught off guard if one of your pipes bursts suddenly, as being able to stop the flow of water quickly could save you a lot of money in repair bills. You should also familiarise yourself with the heating system. You do not want to be too hot or too cold when you are unpacking, with no real idea of how to fix the problem.
Read the meters
You should already have informed your energy providers that you are moving; in addition, it is important to read the meters as soon as possible and pass the readings on to the suppliers to ensure your first energy bills are accurate.
Safety check your appliances
If appliances were included with your new property, it is important to have them thoroughly checked by a professional to make sure they have been safely installed and are in full working order.
Ensuring your new home is covered by a full building and contents insurance policy is incredibly important, as an accident or severe weather event could occur at any moment. Ensuring other key parts of your home, such as your boiler, are properly insured could also save you a lot of time and stress if anything were to happen; also, don’t forget to set up your internet connection!
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
If your new property has detectors installed, make sure you hit the test button to double check they are working properly. If not, new detectors will not take long to install and may save your life one day!
Take some time to double-check the council tax band of your new property. You do not want to set up payments only to later realise that your property has somehow been misclassified and you have been under or overpaying.
Important dates to note down
Knowing on which day of the week the bins and recycling are collected may seem like a small thing; however, when you know that you will soon have a lot of packing materials to recycle, this will make your life much easier.
