Time to reconnect with nature with Pantone's colour of the year for 2017

It is the time of year once again when Pantone reveals its colour of choice for the coming year. In sharp contrast to the soft and calming colours of Rose Quartz and Serenity throughout 2016, 2017 is going to be represented by something that is set to make much more of a dramatic entrance.

Pantone's 17th colour of the year is Greenery, a zesty and fresh yellow-green that symbolises new beginnings and evokes thoughts of nature's restorative powers that emerge during the first days of spring. This shade is present across our world and, as such, should be a small unifying feature that brings us together and provides a shared experience over the coming months.

The executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, said that Pantone hopes that Greenery will provide a level of reassurance as we experience the events of a tumultuous political and social environment. Greenery should help to satisfy our yearning for rejuvenation and symbolise the connections we are seeking to make, both with nature and with our fellow human beings.

It is certainly no coincidence that Pantone has chosen just one colour for the upcoming year. We have all been faced with the prospect of making an important decision between two different options far too often in recent times and it is nice that Pantone has spared us the anguish of another!

As our modern urban lives get busier, our desire to connect with the inherent beauty found in the more peaceful parts of our environment becomes greater. We have already begun to see this through the growing popularity of urban gardens in our cities and the introduction of house plants into our living spaces in ever-growing numbers. We can't walk into a shop without being greeted by a variety of terrariums or beautifully decorated pots that are yearning to hold impressive plants in our living spaces.

Described as ‘nature's neutral', Greenery is far more versatile than initial impressions may suggest. Transcending the seasons, Greenery can be incorporated into many colour combinations, from the rich red and purple hues that emerge during the autumn to the pretty light blues and dusty lilacs of spring and the vibrant yellows and oranges of mid-summer.

Emerald was Pantone's colour of the year in 2013. This opulent shade evoked a sense of glamour and luxury; however, Greenery is almost its exact opposite. Inspired by the shift it is seeing towards sustainability and the environmentally-friendly products being sought by consumers, Pantone wants to tap into ideas of minimalism and the concept of buying less but buying better.

In addition to its colour of the year, Pantone works with New York Fashion Week to reveal a group of ten colours that will be prevalent throughout fashion during spring 2017, which will undoubtedly trickle through into the world of interior design. These include Niagara (an easy-going denim blue), Flame (a rich red-toned orange), Pale Dogwood (a peaceful, innocent pale pink), and Hazelnut (an earthy, warming and versatile neutral).

Much of the coming year is uncertain; however, the presence of Greenery across the creative industries, including design, fashion and food, is one thing we can count on. Here's to stepping into the new year with a revitalised healthy perspective and sense of optimism - it is time to go green!
