Trends worth holding on to
In the world of fashion and interiors, a lot of emphasis is placed on ‘what’s new’. Customers are encouraged to take up the new trends and styles; however, for your average person, this is neither entirely practical nor plausible. Changing your cushions or bed linen or even tea towels is one thing, but redecorating every year is quite another. Few of us have either the inclination or the budget!
Fashions do not change in a heartbeat, however, and the reality is that interior trends in particular tend to last for a couple of years, with some never really going out of fashion. There was a time when if you wanted a red cushion, you would be stuck if it wasn’t the ‘in’ colour; however, there is so much choice available online and on the high street today that you can usually find what you want with relatively little effort.
Here we have a quick look at what to hold on to without fear of looking dated, if this is something that matters to you!
Shades of grey
Like the film franchise of the same name, greys are still going strong. This is not terribly surprising, as greys are a really versatile pallet of colours, from the palest ‘nearly white’ to the rich ‘nearly purples’ or ‘nearly browns’. Like cream and beige, grey is a neutral colour that will work well in combination with almost every other colour.
Vintage or bohemian
The eclectic mix and match look remains popular and is accessible to most people, as it can be based on your existing furniture and belongings. The 1950s, 60s and 70s are key to this look. Watch out for the design classics, whether reproductions or original pieces.
Shine with metallic accessories and textiles, and remember that gold is the colour for this year! Silvers and coppers won’t look out of place in your home, however - it is really down to preference.
The antidote to cool, calm and collected grey, colours are still key. Whether you go down the route of botanical prints, Eastern-inspired jewel colours or simply a feature wall, a quick glance round the DIY stores will reveal that paint, wallpaper and tiles are available in just about every colour under the sun. Again, it is down to personal preference rather than the ‘hot’ colour for this year.
The rule of thumb? Buy what you like and what suits your budget at the time. After all, it is your home.
