Using your interior space to eradicate those unwanted winter blues
As the nights close in and the temperatures drop, you may find that investing time in creating a cosy and welcoming home creeps further up your to-do list. Both the weather and our environment can hugely influence how we feel - while we can’t do anything about the rain, we can introduce key design features into our living spaces to create a comfortable retreat as we shelter from those harsh winter winds.
While you certainly do not need to start painting every wall bright yellow - unless you want to, of course! - adding splashes of warming colours throughout your home can lift your space, making it feel more vibrant, cosy and energetic. You could choose to add splashes of the same warm colour throughout your home for a cohesive feel, or introduce a few different hues within each room to see how they influence your mood and the ambience of each space.
A sense of space
While many rooms benefit from cosy touches, you may also have a room that needs opening up a little to give you the space you need to think or to work. Introducing key pieces that can bounce and reflect light, such as glass tables, large mirrors and metallic tones, will help to create an airy atmosphere that feels bright, open and relaxing.
There is a reason why interior design experts recommend unpacking soft furnishings along with your personal essentials as soon as you move into a new space. Cushions, throws, luxurious bedding and rugs all help to transform a house into a home, with upping the comfort factor of every room a must as summer ends and autumn begins.
Soft furnishings often do not require a large investment, making them ideal features with which to experiment. You may find you benefit from flashes of sunshine yellow, sky blue and millennial pink, or find comfort in deep oranges and rich greens. Make a note of the colours and textures you find yourself drawn to and have fun with them!
Bringing a touch of the outside in has long been lauded as a way to feel grounded and connected with the world around us, which ultimately feels both comforting and wonderfully calming.
Floral wallpaper is going to be a big trend this autumn/winter; however, if you do not want to completely cover your walls, framing a small section of your favourite design is an ideal way to get a similar and slightly more versatile look. Also, never underestimate the power of a bunch of fresh flowers on your coffee table!
